Visual Arts

The 2023 Visual Arts program at Thornhill Park Primary School will be a fun and engaging time where students can explore an artistic world, that sparks enthusiasm and overall engagement. The students will be exposed to a range of fun activities, and they will learn a variety of skills in Art, Craft and Design. They will explore visual artworks that, communicate, challenge and express ideas, while experimenting with a wide range of art materials and technology to create artworks.

Prep

The Prep students will be exploring their own cultures and backgrounds through a variety of activities throughout the year. They will be immersed with colour theory and will experiment with different colour combinations, such as Primary and Secondary colours and the important role primary colours play as foundation in art and on the colour wheel.

They will be involved in art activities that spark imagination and will experiment with different materials and explore techniques, along with use of technology to create amazing artworks. The Prep students will work with in the Elements and Principles of art, such as line, shape, pattern, colour, tone, texture and form, and will respond to artworks considering why people make them. The Prep students will also learn how to finish artworks and begin to understand about how and why we display.

Year 1/2

Year 1/2 students will be exploring their own cultures and backgrounds through a variety of activities throughout the year. They will build on their colour theory knowledge to begin to understand the connections between Primary, Secondary and Complimentary colours, and their relationships on the colour wheel.

They will be exposed to art activities that spark imagination and creativity, while experimenting with different materials, techniques and processes to make artworks in a range of art forms. The students will work with the Elements and Principles of art, such as line, shape, pattern, colour, tone, texture and form. They will learn to respond to a variety of artworks, including The Master’s and works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, by describing subject matter and ideas. The students will also start to learn the art of displaying artworks to appeal to an audience.

Year 3/4

Year 3/4 students will explore ideas and artworks from different cultures and times as inspiration to create visual artworks. They will build on their colour theory knowledge of Primary and Secondary colours and will explore the relationship with Tertiary and Analogous colours, as well as learning the colour wheel order.

The students will be involved in engaging art activities designed to spark interest and that support their learning. They will explore and experiment with different materials, techniques and processes, including technology, from a range of artforms to make artworks. They will work with the elements and principles of art, such as line, shape, pattern, colour, tone, texture, value, perspective and form. They will identify how artworks are viewed from a range of places and times and cultures, including works by The Masters and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. They will also explore different ways of displaying artworks to enhance their meaning and value to an audience.

Year 5/6

Year 5/6 students will explore Visual Arts practices as inspiration to create artworks that express different ideas and beliefs about other cultures and themselves. They will build on their colour theory knowledge of Primary and Secondary colours and will explore the relationship with Tertiary and Analogous colours on the colour wheel, and the colour wheel order.

The students will be involved in engaging art activities, and they will explore and seek inspiration to consider how ideas are expressed. They will use materials, techniques, technologies and processes specific to different art forms when making artworks, and they will compare and describe how ideas are expressed from a contemporary, historical and cultural context to create meaning in their work. The students will work with the elements and principles of art, such as line, shape, pattern, colour, tone, texture, perspective, value and form. They will identify how artworks are viewed from a range of places and times, including The Masters and works by local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The students will create and display artworks and will consider how to add meaning to express ideas to an audience.
