Principal’s Message

Read Time: ( words)

We have 2 more weeks until the end of term and we have just emerged from a crazy couple of weeks in the life of our school.

Book Week

What an amazing effort from everyone during the Book Week Celebrations at our school.  We are very proud of the efforts that all of our staff and students put in and look forward to next year’s event.  I’ll have to start thinking of my costume now!  It was also fabulous to see the level of participation we had for the Tony Bones Production of That Bird has Arms and the Book Fair where we raised over $1000 for our school which will be spent on more books for our classrooms.

Father’s Day

I hope that any Fathers in our community had a wonderful Father’s Day last week.  It was excellent to see so many Dads here with their children during our Thursday afternoon activities.

Camp

We have now officially sent and returned our first ever students to camp.  By all accounts they spent a fantastic 3 days at Weekaway in Benloch and were exhausted when they returned on Wednesday.  We thank Mrs Hackworthy, Mrs Payton, Mr Lindsay, Mr Soumbassis, Ms Naidu, Mr Luca and Kate for their attendance at camp, as it also 3 days away from their families.  It is very much appreciated.  We now look forward to the 3/4 Camp in November.

Mr Cassano

We wish Mr Cassano all the best as he is getting married during the holidays.

Art Show

What an amazing Art Show that has been put together by Mr Pody, Mrs Showbridge and Ms Falls over the year.  It has required many hours of dedicated discussion and preparation to get to the point at which it is today, but it is a testament to the brilliance of our staff that this has pulled together so well.  A huge thank you to the staff who have helped to put up displays after hours and to support our Arts teachers to have this up and running.  A huge thank you to all the teachers who worked hard to get their classes to put together an item that will be a cherished possession in someone’s house after the silent auctions have concluded.  This is another wonderful example of how our Thornhill Park Community has come together to create long lasting memories for our students and their families.  Congratulations.

Enrolments

We are awaiting a number of enrolment forms from people who have filled in an expression of interest to attend our school in 2025.  Many families filled in the expression of interest, but it is now time to fill out a full enrolment form to ensure your students are able to participate in our transition sessions in term 4.  If you have a young person starting in 2025 or if you know someone who has someone of school age in our zone starting next year, we would ask that you send them to our office as a matter of urgency as we are currently employing staff for 2025.

Personal Leave

I will be on leave for the last week of term and Mrs Pittman will be Acting Principal.  I will see you all when I return from my travels at the start of Term 4.

Last Day of School

We finish the term on Friday 20th September at 2.30pm.

Have a great weekend a wonderful holiday.

Our Learning in Years 3 & 4

Dear parents and families,

We are looking forward to wrapping up what has been an exciting Term 3. Only two weeks to go!

We are approaching the end of our unit on Explanation text writing. Students have worked diligently on their text structure, focusing on paragraphs, time connectives and topic specific vocabulary. It has been great to see the children challenging themselves and developing an understanding of content knowledge about volcanoes and metamorphosis (lifecycle of the butterfly). Students are looking forward to commencing the unit on Procedural texts to finish off the term.

In reading, the children have explored text connections and making text predictions. Students have also been exploring new vocabulary. Vocabulary is the key to reading comprehension and we have been learning new words from the serial text The Wizard of Oz, explicitly unpacking definitions, synonyms and antonyms as well as building on their semantic knowledge.

This week we commenced our Multiplication unit which will take us to the end of the term. The children will be exploring different strategies for multiplicative thinking and fluency such as arrays, repeated addition and doubling strategy. Children completed their Data and Representation projects which included collecting, displaying, and interpreting data.

In our Inquiry unit on healthy eating, students explored health messages in the media and how these influence our eating choices. They researched the  Healthy Eating Pyramid and reflected on their own eating habits.

Visual Arts

During Visual Art this week, the Grade 3/4 students have been exploring the work of Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo.

The students created their own portrait of Frida Kahlo. They drew the portrait first using grey pencil, then they outlined the design using a black permanent marker and finally they used watercolour paints to include the vibrant colours Frida used in her art.
