We are halfway through the second term and before we know it, we will be in mid-year holiday mode.  Our students have been making great progress in the classroom and reports are currently being compiled and prepared.

School Beanies

As we move into the cooler weather it may be the right time for you to get your child one of our school beanies.  They are available at the office only and cost $15.  Please ensure your child’s name is on the beanie as with all uniform items in case they lose it.

Enrolments 2027

Enrolments for 2027 are now open and the Prep Information sessions have begun.  Please ensure you get your enrolment forms in as soon as possible if you are within zone.  Students who are out of zone and have siblings currently at our school can also enrol.  People outside of zone can apply to receive an enrolment, but it is unlikely that they will receive an enrolment place due to DET enrolment guidelines based on capacity and growth.

Education Week

This week we celebrate Education Week.  Our student leaders with the assistance of Mrs Pittman have been organising activities for students to participate in over the course of the week.  It is wonderful to see our students developing their leadership capabilities.

Staffing

We welcome Daniel Jagiello, Sadie Cassidy and Emma Martin to our staff.  Daniel will be taking over from Ms Thomas who will be with us until the end of term 2 and then will be off on leave for the rest of the year.  Sadie will be working as an Education Support member and Emma will be working as a Leadership Assistant.  I hope you can make them all feel welcome.

PRIMARY SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. Students learn new things at school every day – missing school puts them behind.

If your child is sick or absent, you are required to notify school as soon as possible on the day of absence using one of the following methods:

1. Online: log the absence directly using Compass.
2. Telephone: the school office and let the staff know your child’s name, class, date of absences and reason.

Notifying the school of your child’s absence either prior to, or on the day that they will be away, helps ensure the safety and wellbeing of children and will fulfil your legal responsibility.

Why do I need to notify the school if my child is absent?

Schools need to know when and why a child is absent and you need to know if your child isn’t at school.

If your child is absent on a particular day and you have not contacted the school to explain why, the absence will be marked as unexplained.

This system also promotes daily school attendance. Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education, they learn new things every day – missing school puts them behind.

What is your responsibility?

You are legally required to ensure your child attends school every day or you must provide an explanation for their absence. You should let the school know in advance of any upcoming absences or let them know in the morning if your child won’t be at school. Avoid making routine medical and dental appointments during the school day or planning family holidays during the term.

Our attendance target is 96%.  Each week, we reward the class with the highest attendance (which includes getting to school on time!), with our school mascot, Ripwell in their classroom for the week.

Our Learning in Years 3 & 4

Our Learning in PE!

During Week 3 we were lucky enough to have the help and support from NRL and Melbourne Storm by having staff take some of our PE lessons. Students were introduced to games, skills and drills based on the game of rugby league. The staff brought a wealth of knowledge, understanding, compassion and energy to every lessons. The students responded accordingly and enjoyed the sessions immensely. We thank John, Malo and Chloe for their contributions to our schools PE program.

Our Learning in Years 3 & 4

This term the grade 3/4 students have been exploring Dreamtime stories during reading lessons. They have identified key features of these texts such as they are set in The Dreaming (the time of creation in Aboriginal culture), the characters are native Australian animals, and they have a cyclical pattern (the end of the story connects to the beginning).

In Writing, students reflected on these Dreamtime stories, using their notetaking skills to support them in presenting a retell of a Dreamtime story. They have also reflected on how these stories can influence their own writing, such as using native Australian animals as characters, or using themes identified in the Dreamtime stories (eg: friendship, kindness, respect).

In Numeracy, students have built upon their knowledge of subtraction, by understanding the vocabulary and focussing on vertical subtraction. During this unit students drew on their place value knowledge, particularly when needing to rename (borrow) to complete a subtraction problem. Students have also been exploring the concept of location and direction. They have enjoyed looking at maps and spaces around the school, providing directions to others and testing the accuracy of their directions.

Inquiry has been fun as we have been looking at terrain and land usage. Last week we made 3D structures of various landscapes and terrains. Students will continue looking at  land use and environmental implications before creating their own town to show case their learning on this topic. 

We have started using a new program for Auslan. These lessons are prerecorded videos, created by people who are deaf or hearing impaired and use Auslan as their first language. So far students have learnt about deaf culture and key elements of communicating in Auslan. This term they will be covering feelings, greetings, days and months, numbers, and weather.  Ask your child how deaf people get each other’s attention. 

In sport, on a fortnightly basis, the students take part in one of 4 sports: cricket, basketball, AFL and soccer.  

Just a reminder about the upcoming Incursion called Y3/4 Aboriginal Cultural Incursion.

A Message from First Aid

Dear Families

As we are just about into the winter months please make sure that if your child has Asthma that is affected by the cold that we have their latest Action Plan and any new medications

We are also coming into Flu season, it is important for everyone to practice good hygiene – hand washing and using tissues to blow noses.

It is also helpful to donate a box of tissues to your child’s classroom.

To help with keeping warm, we still have beanies in the office for sale.

There are many jumpers and jackets in lost property without names.  Please clearly label your children’s clothing so that it can be returned to them if found.

Making sure that your child has their jumpers and beanies helps to keep them warm and cosy and less likely to become sick at school.

If your child requires any medication at school it must be dropped off at reception and forms need to be completed before your child can have the medication

Medications MUST NOT be sent to school with children under any circumstances.
